  1. 1. Former state of SW Germany, which had
  2. Karlsruhe as its capital. Baden was captured
  3. from the Romans in 282 by the Alemanni; later
  4. it became a margravate and in 1806, a grand
  5. duchy. A state of the German empire
  6. 1871-1918, then a republic, and under Hitler
  7. a Gau (province), it was divided between the
  8. Lander of Wurttemberg-Baden and Baden in 1945
  9. and in 1952 made part of Baden-Wurttemberg.

  12. near Zurich; at an altitude of 388 m/1,273
  13. ft; population (1981) 23,140. Its hot sulphur
  14. springs and mineral waters have been visited
  15. since Roman times.
